The Orthodox Academy in Crete was co-founded by Dr. Alexandros Papaderos to promote peace through the socratic style of eating and drinking together while discussing the issues of the day. Dr Papaderos is sitting across the table from me and his wife Anna. They are both retired now and I just want to say how grateful I am for their presence at this pre-gathering of Ecothee 13. I am also grateful that he and Anna made the journey out to Vancouver with Lucas and his family to participate in the Inter-Ecothee gathering held at Bethany-Newton United Church that I chaired the year before with the blessings of the Moderator of the United Church of Canada and Archbishop Sotirios of Toronto and Canada. Being involved in the Ecothee symposia, I am learning about peace and peacemaking. It takes a lot of self control and humility to cultivate an environment for peace to flourish. It's not easy to admit the truth sometimes, especially if your version contradicts or blames others or makes you or others look bad. Peace is about accepting the truth with grace, trusting that forgiveness is like sharing a glass of cold water on a hot day or sharing a meal with friends and trusted colleagues and acquaintances. I am looking forward to the next Ecothee in 2017 and I am very grateful to the new director and the community of Kolymbari for their continued support of the Ecothee program. I have much more to learn from them about peace and Greek culture, past and present. I invite all who read this post to come learn with me, and I thank all past participants for sharing their truth with me and allowing me to share mine with them.
